All Star 1 is a family-friendly conference at which you may start your summer with a restorative and relaxing week full of intellectual, musical, and other thoughtful and artistic pursuits that promote personal growth and inclusive community, where families, couples and singles return year after year and where newcomers are warmly welcomed.
Your day at All Star 1 might start with morning meditation in the Summer House, a polar bear dip off the dock, or a cup of coffee on the Oceanic Hotel’s expansive porch. Your evening might end by attending (or even participating in) a show, chapel service, or late-night music. In between, you are served three nutritious family-style meals, and can attend a morning lecture, catch an afternoon talk-on-the-rocks or nap, commune with nature, complete your crafts or puzzles on the porch, create your masterpiece in the art barn, or rock on a chair or in a band (so bring your musical instruments, whether acoustic or electric!). While each day is full of scheduled and impromptu activities, what and how much you choose to do is entirely up to you.
All Star 1 parents and their children – from newborn Nestlings to Senior Teens – benefit from our Children’s Program which provides age-appropriate activities led by dedicated teachers from 9:30-11:30 AM and from 1:30-3:00 PM on most days. Age-based bedtimes between 8:00 PM and 11:00 PM are non-negotiable and hall monitoring during this entire interval is provided on the Oceanic and Atlantic corridors of the hotel’s second floor where infants, young children and their parents preferentially sleep. All this support allows parents to have a vacation with – and admittedly fleetingly from – their kids. Additional activities include the Children’s Talent Show, the much anticipated Great People Hunt, the Quadrathlon, and – for Junior Teens – a prolonged project building a raft together and paddling it to Smuttynose Island and back!

Dean of the School of Freshwater Sciences and Director of the Great Lakes Genomics Center at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Rebecca D. Klaper, Ph.D., is Dean of the School of Freshwater Sciences and Director of the Great Lakes Genomics Center at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where academic researchers contribute to the protection and management of freshwater resources by measuring ecosystem health, monitoring invasive species, identifying and characterizing pathogenic bacteria and viruses in water sources, wastewater and beaches, sequencing the genetic code of native and introduced animal and plant species critical to the ecosystem and aquaculture in the Great Lakes, measuring the impact of chemicals and other stressors on freshwater organisms, and linking the health of aquatic life to human health. Professor Klaper studies the potential impact of emerging contaminants – including nanoparticles and pharmaceuticals – on aquatic life, measures the sensitivity or resistance of organisms to chemical stressors using genomic technologies, determines how these chemicals may be designed or redesigned to limit their adverse impacts on the environment, and promotes treatment technologies that remove contaminants from the wastewater stream.
Professor Klaper earned her Bachelor of Sciences with Honors in Biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (where she met her fellow classmate, Michele Cohen!), earned both her Masters in Science in Entomology and Doctor of Philosophy in Ecology at the University of Georgia, and is a Fulbright Scholar, a Science and Technology Policy Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Nationally recognized for her scientific expertise, Professor Klaper has served on or advised the United States National Nanotechnology Initiative, the International Organization for Economic and Cooperative Development Panel on Nanotechnology, the Alliance for the Great Lakes, the International Joint Commission Regarding the Potential Impacts of Nanomaterials, Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products, and Other Emerging Contaminants, the National Academies Panel on the Environmental Impact of Currently Marketed Sunscreens and Potential Human Impacts of Changes in Sunscreen Usage, the National Academies Panel to Develop a Research Strategy for Environmental, Health, and Safety Aspects of Engineered Nanomaterials, and the Chemical Safety for Sustainability and Human and Environmental Risk Assessment Subcommittee of the Board of Scientific Counselors at the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Professor Klaper will focus on “Freshwater: Facts, Follies, and Fights” and deliver the following five lectures during the All Star 1 Conference in 2024:

- Legacy and emerging contaminants in our freshwater systems
- U.S. water wars and compacts
- Protecting our water resources: What can we do?
